Curtis was born in Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia the daughter of Carmencita Ojales a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan and James Ernest Curtis Smith, an Australian lawyer. In 1982, her father married Ojales. Jasmine is her sister who works as an actress. Clare is one of their cousins at the father's end. Clare passed away at 4 months of age in 2007 after suffering from an illness of the heart.
